Kanwar Yatra is a spiritual journey that involves walking long distances, often along busy highways and major roads. With thousands of Kanwariyas travelling at the same time, road safety becomes extremely important. Following simple safety practices can help you complete your journey safely while protecting yourself and other travellers.
1. Always Walk on the Designated Route
Whenever possible, use the route or lane specifically arranged for Kanwariyas. Avoid walking on the main traffic lane, especially when vehicles are moving at high speed. Follow directions given by police, volunteers, and local authorities.
2. Stay Alert Around Traffic
Do not assume that approaching vehicles will always slow down. Stay alert when walking near highways, intersections, turns, and crossings. Keep an eye on cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles.
3. Walk in Groups
Walking with friends or family members is safer than travelling alone. Stay together and avoid suddenly moving away from your group. If someone becomes tired or needs help, the group can support them.
4. Wear Bright and Comfortable Clothes
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Bright or reflective clothing can make you more visible to drivers, particularly during early morning, evening, or nighttime travel.
5. Use Reflective Accessories at Night
If you need to walk after sunset, consider using reflective bands, reflective strips, or other visibility accessories. Carrying a small flashlight can also help you see the road and make yourself more visible.
6. Avoid Using Your Phone While Walking
Do not continuously use your mobile phone, watch videos, or wear headphones while walking near traffic. These distractions can prevent you from noticing approaching vehicles or important warnings.
7. Cross Roads Carefully
Use designated crossings, pedestrian crossings, bridges, or underpasses whenever available. Before crossing, stop and check traffic carefully from both directions.
8. Take Regular Rest Breaks
Walking for long hours can cause exhaustion, which reduces concentration and increases the risk of accidents. Take regular breaks at safe rest areas instead of stopping suddenly on the roadside.
9. Stay Hydrated
Carry sufficient drinking water and drink regularly, especially during hot weather. Dehydration and fatigue can make it difficult to remain alert while walking.
10. Follow Traffic and Police Instructions
During Kanwar Yatra, authorities may change traffic routes or create temporary Kanwariya lanes. Always follow instructions from police officers, traffic personnel, volunteers, and camp organizers.
11. Keep Your Kanwar Secure
If you are carrying a Kanwar, make sure it is properly balanced and does not obstruct other pedestrians or vehicles. Be especially careful while stopping, turning, or crossing roads.
12. Avoid Sudden Stops on Highways
Never stop suddenly in the middle of a road or near a highway lane for photos, food, or rest. Move to a designated safe area before taking a break.
13. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy
Save important emergency numbers on your phone and keep identification documents with you. If travelling in a group, make sure everyone knows where to meet in case someone gets separated.
14. Be Extra Careful During Bad Weather
Rain, fog, and poor visibility can make highway walking more dangerous. Slow down, stay together, use reflective items, and follow official safety instructions during difficult weather conditions.
15. Respect Other Road Users
Kanwar Yatra routes are shared with local residents, emergency vehicles, and other road users. Stay disciplined, avoid blocking traffic, and give priority to ambulances and emergency vehicles.
