The Kawad Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva, known as Kanwariyas, during the holy month of Shravan. First-timers often find this journey both spiritually uplifting and physically demanding, so a little preparation goes a long way.
Before you begin, ensure you are physically fit for long walks, sometimes covering 20–50 kilometers a day. Wear comfortable footwear, light cotton clothing, and carry essentials like a water bottle, first-aid kit, sunscreen, and energy snacks. Most pilgrims collect holy water from the Ganga River at Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Sultanganj and carry it in a decorated kawad balanced on their shoulders.
Maintain discipline throughout the journey. Kanwariyas traditionally follow a satvik lifestyle—avoiding alcohol, tobacco, non-vegetarian food, and negative behavior. Respect fellow pilgrims, traffic rules, and local residents. Many routes have free food stalls (bhandaras) and medical camps set up for devotees—make use of them when needed.
Spiritually, focus on chanting “Bol Bam” and meditating on Lord Shiva. On reaching your destination temple, offer the Ganga jal to the Shiva lingam with devotion. For first-timers, traveling in a group or with experienced Kanwariyas is highly recommended for safety and guidance.
The Kawad Yatra is not just a walk—it’s a journey of faith, endurance, and inner transformation.
